SMAT MCP documentation

SMAT connects an AI assistant to the brand and content you manage in SMAT. Access depends on the current rollout, your account, your permissions and the operations available to that connection. The instructions below describe the supported contract, not a promise that every assistant surface has completed end-to-end testing.

Account, plan and availability

You need an active SMAT account with access to the brand you intend to use. Your assistant must support a remote MCP connection with OAuth. Its own plan and workspace settings may impose additional requirements.

The free SMAT plan is read-only. Paid AI actions require an eligible paid plan and available brand credits. Starter, Pro and Studio are the currently offered paid plans; consult the Plans page and your account for current terms. Do not assume that buying a plan bypasses a restricted MCP rollout.

A tool may be listed but blocked for your connection, role, content state or deployment. Ask the assistant to read the brand context and the action’s blockers before making changes. This documentation does not announce approval or publication in the OpenAI or Anthropic directories.

Before any MCP tool call, acknowledge the current Terms and Privacy Notice in the SMAT interface. Before preparing, publishing or scheduling a post, also acknowledge the required disclaimer there, confirming that you are responsible for what is published. Drafts, paid generation and review decisions do not need it.

Connect through OAuth

Use the MCP server address for the SMAT environment you intend to access. The MCP resource uses the /api/mcp path. Do not replace a production address with a local or temporary test address. Contact support if you have not been given the correct environment address.

  1. Start a remote MCP connection in your assistant and select OAuth authentication. The assistant should open SMAT’s authorization flow.
  2. Sign in to SMAT and acknowledge the current Terms and Privacy Notice if prompted. Check the requesting client and redirect destination. A client-supplied display name is not, by itself, proof of identity.
  3. Choose one available brand or, if you own the account, all brands of the account (this also covers brands added later). Select the permissions, access duration and, when relevant, the per-action spending limit that fit your intended use.
  4. Review the OAuth consent and approve or deny it there. Return to your assistant after approval. Never paste OAuth tokens or authorization codes into the conversation. Before your first publication through the assistant, acknowledge the required disclaimer in SMAT.
  5. Begin with a read-only request: “Read the connected SMAT brand and tell me which actions are available. Do not change or generate anything.” Verify the brand before proceeding.

Scopes and brand boundaries

A connection covers the brand you chose or, when the account owner granted it, all brands of the account. With a single-brand connection, changing the subject of the conversation does not switch its authorization to another brand; use a separately authorized connection. With an all-brands connection the assistant lists the brands and names the brand in every request.

Scopes are an upper bound on access. SMAT also checks the user’s role, the operation’s required permission and its current blockers.

Scopes and brand boundaries
ScopeAllows
smat:readRead saved brand context, content, previews, publication results, operation results, strategy, insights, competitor data, the schedule, topic ideas, what needs attention and the workflow guide; request an action estimate.
smat:writeCreate, edit and delete drafts, attach supplied media, manage overlays, record review decisions, manage the schedule, act on topic ideas and Start page insights, add competitors and change the brand profile, subject to your role. Includes read access.
smat:generateRequest paid work: captions, image ideas, images and image edits, text for the image, a topic refresh or a competitor analysis. Includes write and read access. Does not grant publication access.
smat:publishPrepare, publish or schedule content. Includes write and read access, but does not grant paid generation access.

What the connection can do

The available contract separates reading saved information from creating new work. Saved strategy, insights and competitor posts are not automatically refreshed by reading them.

  • Read brand context, see what needs attention, find and inspect posts or carousels, retrieve previews, check operation results and, after publication, the post link and stored results per channel.
  • Create or edit a draft, attach supported media (also an image attached in the chat where the assistant supports it, or a photo already in SMAT), preview up to three looks for text on the image and save a chosen design. Saving your own text does not generate AI copy or images.
  • Create and edit a carousel with 2–6 slides. A deterministic overlay render is separate from AI image generation and does not order another AI image.
  • Request paid work: a caption, image ideas, text for the image, an image or image edit, or new topic ideas. Carousel image generation has a style stage and a separate remaining-slides stage; accepting the master does not start the second stage.
  • Read stored competitors and their posts, and add a competitor's Instagram profile for free. A new paid analysis targets one saved competitor through Business Discovery.
  • Prepare a publication, publish to supported connected Facebook or Instagram destinations, or schedule, move and cancel a publication when the operation is available.
  • Plan with the schedule and topic ideas, change the brand profile and delete drafts, as described below.

Captions, text on images and image edits

By default SMAT writes the caption and the text on the image. The assistant asks SMAT's writer, which uses the brand profile and your post history. It writes the copy itself only when you give the words or ask it to write them. Both SMAT writers are paid actions and need your yes.

For text on a photo, the assistant previews up to three different looks in one free call, in your brand colours, and shows the one that hides the least of the photo's subject. Nothing is saved until you choose a look.

Image edits can use quick presets that need no instructions: finishing for Instagram, exposure, white balance, noise reduction and a gentle colour correction. Other presets change the background, subject, palette or mood, or add or remove an element, from a short instruction. Expand frame keeps the photo, makes it smaller in the same format and extends its surroundings, for example to leave room for text. SMAT cannot move the camera, change the angle or crop to another format.

On Instagram you can tag public accounts on feed images, carousels, reels and stories, and add up to three collaborators (not on stories). The assistant reads the current tags before changing them, and they appear in the package you check before publishing.

What needs attention, schedule and topic ideas

The assistant can read the same list as the Start page: posts waiting for your decision, topic ideas, free and missed slots, account setup and background jobs. When you decide, it can snooze or dismiss an insight from that page.

It reads the publishing schedule one week at a time. When you ask, it can change the rhythm (posts per week and per day, story slots, preferred hours, days to skip), add or skip a free slot, move a missed empty slot to a new time, or accept or reject a rhythm SMAT proposed. It tells you the change before making it. Schedule changes publish nothing and use no credits.

It reads the topic ideas SMAT found for the brand, and on your decision approves, dismisses or turns one into a draft or a free slot. Starting a draft from a topic is free and writes no caption. Looking for new topic ideas is a paid refresh.

Brand profile and several brands

With your agreement the assistant can change one section of the brand profile: identity, audience, voice or visual description. It shows the old and new wording first and saves only after your yes. Colours, logo and fonts are changed in SMAT settings. Changing the profile uses no credits and needs a role that can manage the brand.

An account owner can grant one connection to all brands of the account, including brands added later. The assistant then lists the brands and names the brand in every request. A connection for one brand works only with that brand.

Costs and confirmation before paid work

Reading saved data, requesting an estimate and reading an existing preview do not start paid generation. Saving supplied text or rendering a deterministic overlay is not an AI-image generation charge. The assistant provider may account for its own usage separately.

Paid SMAT actions consume the brand’s credits according to actual usage. The estimate contains an internal spending ceiling and blockers, not a fixed price or a promise of the final charge. A fresh estimate is needed for the requested action; quotes expire after 5 minutes.

Before paid work, the assistant says what will be generated or analyzed and that it is paid from the brand's credits by actual usage, then waits for your authorization. It does not quote an amount before the action runs; after the action completes it can report the credits actually used, when SMAT returns that number. The request must stay within the connection's spending limit. Permission to read or estimate is not permission to generate.

For a generated carousel, review and accept the style master first. The remaining slides need a separate estimate and authorization. Do not authorize a repeat merely because a previous operation is still processing. This is a usage procedure, not a guarantee that every assistant displays the same confirmation dialog.

Review, publish and schedule

Review the final text, media, destination accounts and intended time before authorizing publication. Preparing a publication checks and freezes its package; it may also send the text to the configured AI provider to assess whether a disclosure is needed, without using your credits. Preparation itself does not contact the social network.

Publishing is an external action. A completed draft, a prepared package or an accepted request is not proof of publication. Check the operation result and the platform’s post or album reference. For a carousel, success of an individual child container is not proof that the album was published.

Scheduling stores the timetable and later the scheduler publishes the live post under SMAT’s controls. Check the draft again after edits. Revoking the MCP connection does not cancel an admitted schedule. Cancel the scheduled publication separately.

An uncertain platform response must be reconciled before retrying. This connection has no tool to withdraw a published post; use the platform’s own controls where available.

Images, uploads and temporary links

A preview can include image data and a temporary link. Links expire after 5 minutes and should not be treated as permanent public asset URLs. Request a new preview of the same saved asset or slide when needed. Do not expose these links in public support reports.

Image uploads accept at most 10 MiB and 40 megapixels. Upload requests are single-use and expire after 10 minutes. Completing an upload attaches the processed asset to the intended post or slide. The host must be able to transfer your explicitly selected file; not every host surface or old conversation attachment supports this.

The contract also covers uploads of your own MP4 or QuickTime video, up to 100 MiB, for supported video formats. It does not provide AI video generation. Video previews return available metadata and an existing thumbnail, not a downloadable MP4 URL. Video upload, scheduling and publication should not be assumed tested on every host.

Results, revisions and retries

Long-running work returns an operation reference. Read that operation until the result is known; do not start a second paid job to check progress. Accepted, prepared, completed and published describe different stages.

Edits and approvals refer to specific content revisions. Selecting another image or changing a carousel’s shared design can make previous approvals stale. Reload the current draft and review the affected material when SMAT reports a conflict or incomplete deck.

Delete a draft

The assistant can delete a draft, a post waiting for text or photo review, or a failed generation. It must name the post and wait for your explicit yes. Deleting cannot be undone. Anything scheduled, being published, published or ready to publish is refused, as is a post that was already scheduled or sent to a platform. A freed calendar slot becomes available again.

SMAT deletes the draft record at once and removes the draft's stored files, such as uploads, generated images and videos, about one hour later. Brand files such as logos stay.

Revoke the connection

Revoke the MCP connection in SMAT and remove it from the assistant. A new connection requires a new authorization. Keep Facebook and Instagram connected unless you separately intend to disconnect those services.

Revocation does not delete the brand, drafts or content already sent to the assistant. It does not withdraw posts or automatically cancel previously admitted jobs and schedules. For scheduled publications, use the cancellation action or SMAT’s scheduling interface.

Data flow and privacy

Your assistant sends the arguments of an authorized tool request to SMAT. SMAT returns the selected brand data, content, media or result needed for that operation to the assistant. Sending a request to SMAT is different from asking the assistant’s own model to generate text.

When you request paid AI work in SMAT, the applicable SMAT generation path may send task context and media to its configured providers. Publication sends the selected content to the connected social platform. The Privacy Notice, Data Processing Addendum and AI Disclosure describe SMAT’s policies and the stated provider evidence status.

Preparing a publication may also send its text to the configured AI provider to assess whether a disclosure is required. This is a system check funded by SMAT, not an order for new text or an image; it does not consume your credits.

The assistant provider also processes data it receives under its own account settings and policies. Disconnecting SMAT does not delete the provider’s copies or conversation history. Review both sides before sending confidential or personal material. This guide does not promise a shared retention period, a no-training commitment or an international-transfer arrangement not established by the applicable policies.

Limitations and safe first use

Availability is not determined by the tool name alone. Rollout flags, brand eligibility, role permissions, credit limits, content readiness, host capabilities and connected platform accounts can block an action.

Use a brand and destinations you control for testing. A name containing “test” does not prove that the destination is isolated or safe to publish to. Start with reads, then a clearly authorized draft. Paid work and public publication need their own authorization.

This page does not certify all OAuth, media or publication flows on every host, nor approval in a software directory. Contact support with a minimal redacted report when a supported action fails.
